"Bringing girls voices to the world”
The year was 1992. With eleven-year old twin daughters about to enter adolescence, Nancy Gruver felt the anxiety many women experience remembering their own ‘tween and teen years.
Often girls are confused by what they dream for themselves and what society expects of them. Bombarded by “perfect girl” stereotypes and often outrageous media images, many girls give over their voices and give up their dreams. Research shows that girls need resistance strategies to remain connected to what psychologist Emily Hancock calls “the girl within.”
Unable to find practical, accessible resources for her daughters, Gruver and her husband, Joe Kelly, envisioned a magazine for all girls who want their voices heard and their dreams taken seriously. They brought the concept to their daughters, Mavis and Nia, who “recruited” friends to join the first girls editorial board. These twenty girls worked together to develop the departments, themes, and features for the publication that launched nine months later: the award-winning, ad-free New Moon®, The Magazine for Girls and Their Dreams.
This process lives on today, with girls at the center of New Moon Girl Media. Girls around the globe participate in New Moon’s various advisory and editorial boards. Together with adult staff, New Moon’s girl advisors develop our bimonthly magazine, internet experiences, products and services for girls and the adults who support them as they grow in self-confidence, creativity, and courage to pursue their individual dreams.
New Moon Girl Media remains dedicated to providing safe, energetic, respectful communities where girls ages 8 to 15 explore, discover, create, grow and share their voices to make a positive difference in their lives and in the world.
